Bad news bears...

Today I found out that I have gestational diabetes. I had to do the glucose testing yesterday morning. It involved drinking a bottle of sugary stuff, then going to the doctor an hour later and leaving blood and urine samples. I thought everything would be fine because the doctor said the sugar levels in my urine weren't "that bad". Supposedly if things were a little off I'd then have to have a 3-hour glucose test as a next step. Well, the nurse called this morning and said I failed the blood test "big time". I guess my level was 244 and anything above 129 is considered gestational diabetes. So I don't even get to try the other tests...it's straight to plan B!

I have to go to the hospital on Wednesday and meet with a nutritionist. Then I have to meet with a specialized diabetes nurse who will give me a prescription for a monitor and lancets. I have to check my glucose level 4 times a day! Which means I have to stick myself 4 times a day! What!?!?!? Not looking forward to that at all. I told my coworker I need a stunt typer...how will I be able to type at work when my fingers are being used as pin cushions?

Hopefully I can just follow a specialized diet and keep everything under control. I will do anything not to take insulin.

The nurse told me to lay off the "junk" until Wednesday. The scary thing is that I really have been eating healthy most of the time.

I'm a little worried about what effect, if any, this has had or will have on the baby. What I've read online seems to be mostly positive, as long as everything is kept in check.

I'll report back after I meet with the nurse on Wednesday...

Plants are in!

The plants are in and the seeds are down. No grass so far, but we're watering feverishly and hoping for the best. Here we go...

They started the day with a big pile of compost and mulch and placed the plants just so down the front walkway

Plants going in on the side of the house

And in the front garden area

And the finished product (sans grass currently)!!

There will eventually be a bird bath in the middle of the circle of flowers

And devil dog says "Bye til next time!"

Pictures Galore

I'll post some pictures taken over the last couple of weeks:

Here are Jeff and I at the Red Sox v. Cardinals game back in late June

Here are Daphne and Trixie helping Daddy make hamburgers for the 4th of July bbq and willing meats to fall before them onto the floor. Note their festive scarves supplied by the groomer (Jeff made me take them off before everyone arrived for the bbq)

Here are D&T morning of 7/4 on the lookout for squirrels. I love when they lay in the exact same position like this

Jeff and Doug checking out the fireworks (I love when they stand in the exact same position like this...hee hee hee)

Onto the landscaping...here is the whole house and yard before

Here is the whole house and yard after. WOW!

This was the walkway leading up to the front porch/door before...those bushes were thorny and not so pretty

Here is a view from the road...what a big mess

Here is a close up of the bottom step, which was replaced. Those retaining walls were supposed to go too, but in the end they had to stay

These are the awful, awful bushes that lined the front yard (they were totally out of control because Jeff refused to trim them, understandably so.) They've been our nemesis for the last 2 and half years. It was nice to see them go.

Here is the "garden" on the left and right of the steps before

Here is the driveway at the front/side of the house and the landing (i.e. the tire eater) off the side of the porch

Those awful bushes were the first thing to go on demo day. Jeff approves!

Say goodbye to the ugly cement walkway! Apparently jack hammers are not required!

They made quick work of removing the rest of the plants and grass

Then it was time for the hardscape to go in. We got a new walkway and landing (Belgard Dublin Cobble Pavers in Field Beige) and also extended the driveway out 3 feet with granite cobbles

The new beautiful walkway!

The new driveway extension

The new landing

And a blank canvas (i.e. the dirt lawn) ready for plants and grass!

Our landscaper comes on Tuesday to start the plantings and put the seed in for the grass. I'll post some more "after" shots this week.

See you next time...

General Update

Not much to report lately. I've had 2 doctors appointments in the last month and they went well. The first one was ridiculous...I waited 2 hours to see the doctor and she literally spent 5 minutes with me. That was a bummer. The last appointment was last Thursday and it went much better. They were actually running on time and I was in and out quickly. I got to hear the baby's heartbeat again which was nice. I go back in 3 weeks and will have a diabetes test which involves drinking a bottle of sugary stuff and then getting blood taken and the obligatory peeing in a cup. Fun.

I've been feeling the baby move more and more. I think. It could just be digestion, but I'm pretty sure it's the baby. On Sunday night I woke up at 2:30am and couldn't go back to sleep. Luckily I worked from home yesterday and was able to take a cat nap in the middle of the day. It's getting increasingly more difficult to get comfortable at night. I am not supposed to sleep on my back, but with these broad shoulders it gets pretty uncomfortable on my side for hours and hours. I keep waking up on my back and/or tossing and turning all night. Only 4 more months...

4th of July was great. We had a bbq and a bunch of friends over. Jeff ended the night with some SERIOUS fireworks in the back yard. I thought for sure we'd get hate mail from the neighbors, but it all worked out. Poor Trixie was so traumatized that she hid in the shower. It took her a good hour to recover. Daphne and her little pea brain were unphased.

Tomorrow begins the landscaping project for the front yard and driveway. I took some "before" shots over the weekend. Once we get the "after" shots we'll post all of those. I also need to post pictures of the house and nursery for Mom. Lots to do...
