Today I found out that I have gestational diabetes. I had to do the glucose testing yesterday morning. It involved drinking a bottle of sugary stuff, then going to the doctor an hour later and leaving blood and urine samples. I thought everything would be fine because the doctor said the sugar levels in my urine weren't "that bad". Supposedly if things were a little off I'd then have to have a 3-hour glucose test as a next step. Well, the nurse called this morning and said I failed the blood test "big time". I guess my level was 244 and anything above 129 is considered gestational diabetes. So I don't even get to try the other tests...it's straight to plan B!
I have to go to the hospital on Wednesday and meet with a nutritionist. Then I have to meet with a specialized diabetes nurse who will give me a prescription for a monitor and lancets. I have to check my glucose level 4 times a day! Which means I have to stick myself 4 times a day! What!?!?!? Not looking forward to that at all. I told my coworker I need a stunt typer...how will I be able to type at work when my fingers are being used as pin cushions?
Hopefully I can just follow a specialized diet and keep everything under control. I will do anything not to take insulin.
The nurse told me to lay off the "junk" until Wednesday. The scary thing is that I really have been eating healthy most of the time.
I'm a little worried about what effect, if any, this has had or will have on the baby. What I've read online seems to be mostly positive, as long as everything is kept in check.
I'll report back after I meet with the nurse on Wednesday...

Hey Whit - I hade gestational diabetes too when I was pregnant with Caroline. Meant some big lifestyle changes (as though the changes with pregnancy weren't enough!) but we fell into a rythym with it and all was good. Give me a call anytime if you want to chat. I know it's scarey in the beginning - but you'll get very used to being a pin cushion - and then just keep using that little life inside you as motivation to stick to the diet and walking plan :) Love, Cousin Karen
Karen Olivero also had gestational diabetes when pregnant with Caroline. If you want to chat with Karen about her experience, Karen's e-mail is karen.olivero@hp.com
